Choucas Climbing Harness
The Blue Ice Choucas is the fourth generation of the harness that defined the ultralight alpine and ski mountaineering category when it launched in 2012. Acclaimed by mountain guides and now weighing just 142g in a size S, it remains one of the lightest fully-featured mountaineering harnesses available — and the four ice screw slots, four gear loops, and patented leg loop opening system set it apart from lighter alternatives that sacrifice functionality for grams.
- Patented leg loop opening system — the Choucas opens fully at each leg loop, allowing you to step in and out without removing skis, crampons, or snowshoes. Essential for glacier approaches, steep ski terrain, and any objective where gearing up on the move matters.
- Four ice screw slots — two dedicated ice screw keepers on the waistbelt and two on the leg loops, keeping screws accessible and organised on ice routes and winter objectives where a full mountaineering rack is needed.
- Four large gear loops — significantly more gear-carrying capacity than comparable ultralight ski-touring harnesses, which typically offer two loops at this weight class.
- UHMW polyethylene webbing — Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene, in the same material family as Dyneema: an exceptionally strong, abrasion-resistant fibre used in all primary load-bearing components.
- Full-strength magic ring belay loop — rated to full strength in a reinforced ring configuration, providing a secure and reliable belay anchor on technical terrain.
- Waist speed buckle — single aluminium waist buckle allows fast, precise tightening over multiple layers without requiring full rethreading.
- Wide waistbelt geometry — despite the ultralight weight, the wide waistbelt distributes load across the hip effectively, making short rappels and hanging stances manageable on technical routes.
- Adjustable and replaceable rear elastic — the rear strap elastic can be adjusted and replaced in the field, extending the serviceable life of the harness.
- 142g (size S) — packs to fist-size, fits in a jacket pocket or small pack lid; weight is negligible when carried in reserve on a long alpine day.
See our mountaineering gear checklist for guidance on building a complete alpine kit, or browse our full crampon range — the Choucas is designed to be donned with crampons on.
